Twenty-Five Years. One Standard.
The Foundation
Built on a promise
no one else would make.
In 1998, James Whitfield left a general contracting firm — not because the work was wrong, but because the way it was done was. Budgets expanded. Timelines slipped. Clients were told to expect it. He didn't accept that as inevitable.
He founded The Best Contractor, Inc. with a single commitment: a fixed price and a fixed date, in writing, before a single tool touches your home. Not a range. Not an estimate padded with "typical overages." A signed, contractually guaranteed number with financial consequences if we miss it.
Twenty-five years and 47 completed projects later, that commitment has been honored on every one. James is personally present at every site visit, every design review, and every final walkthrough.
The firm intentionally limits itself to eight active projects. It is a deliberate choice against growth for growth's sake — made to ensure every client receives the same undivided attention that built the reputation.

The Standard
Three things we never
negotiate away.
01
The Price Is the Price.
We write one number, sign it, and honor it. No change orders for scope we missed. No "typical overage" cushion baked in. Our fixed-price contracts carry a financial penalty if we go over — because accountability without consequence is just a promise.
02
The Date Is the Date.
Our finish dates are set on real sequencing, real labor availability, real material lead times. That date goes into the contract. It has never moved — not once across 47 consecutive projects. We have never asked a client to accept a delay we caused.
03
Eight Projects. No More.
We cap at eight active projects at any moment. It is a deliberate choice against growth for its own sake. Each client deserves James's attention and our crew's best work — and those are finite resources we refuse to overextend.
"The client shouldn't have to think about their project once we've taken it on. That's the entire point of our contract — full responsibility, fully transferred."
